strategy of the NLS and its place in Scotland’s national library network.
Underpinning that vision is a strong emphasis on the important role of

educate, entertain and inspire.
Gerald Leitner, Secretary General, Austrian Library Association, and former President of EBLIDA Libraries guarantee free access to content, information, and culture for all European citizens. However, in the digital environment, the current legal framework prevents libraries from fulfilling these essential services to our society, especially regarding the provision of e-books and digital content. The former President of EBLIDA discusses the ‘Right to E-Read’ campaign in the context of the future of libraries.

Spotlight on a special service: Prison Libraries
The prison library sector is one of the most
challenging environments in which our members work. Although every prison in
Scotland is obliged to provide a library service, the interpretation of that
obligation can vary widely. The
community profile of a prison population is very challenging too – one quarter
have below functional levels of literacy, over 30% have problems with numeracy. Drugs and alcohol will have played a
significant role in the lives of many as will mental health problems. In this
seminar Jim King, Head of Offender Learning at the Scottish Prison Service,
discusses partnership work with SLIC and other strategic agencies to develop
the educational role of libraries and ensure they are equipped to support
reader development, basic skills support and legal advice.
